I was on duty for the midnight shift on Friday, May 15.
I was watching the pool gate since the lock was broken and I had to enforce pool closing after 11 p.m.
During my 1 a.m. patrol, I was walking the South parking lot, which was full of cars, when I noticed a strong burning smell. I quickly walked around the fence bordering the pool deck, and saw a four foot area of wood chips was smoldering near the jacuzzi. The wind was accelerating the fire.
I ran back into the lobby and grabbed a fire extinguisher. When I returned outside and discharged the extinguisher, I realized it would not be enough to contain the fire.
I looked around for another sprayable water source to douse the fire with. I found a hose at the far end of the pool which just reached the fire area.
I was able to contain the fire with the hose, and a crisis was averted. The rest of the night passed without furthur incident.
