I was on patrol during the overnight shift on Saturday, Oct. 9. It was a fairly busy night. The hotel was booked up for the night, and Denny's Diner had filled up following the bar rush.
About 3:35 a.m., some visitors to Dennys approached me in the parking lot to report a woman had just been assaulted on nearby Lenox Avenue. The visitors had rushed to her aid when they heard the commotion.
Evidently, the woman had been roughed up by her boyfriend, who panicked and drove off in a blue Honda Prelude when the customers approached the scene.
Adam, the Denny's Manager on duty phoned the Daytona Police to report the assault. Patrol car #49 arrived on site within minutes to take charge.
The officer interviewed the victim and obtained all the facts. However, the woman did not wish to press charges against her boyfriend. Without any charges from the victim, the officer had no recourse to pursue the matter.
The guests who had initially rushed to the woman's aid volunteered to drive her home. After making certain the woman was not seriously injured, the officer left the site about 4:00 a.m.
